Digital Print

All prints supplied by the State Library are now generated from digital files.  The digital prints are created from 300 ppi (pixels per inch) RGB tiff files.

All prints are supplied on paper cut to international paper sizes, i.e. A4, A3, A2, A1. Actual images may be printed to specific sizes, but will only be supplied on the appropriate paper size. Images are charged for at the cost of the actual supplied paper sheet.

Prints are produced using an Epson 7600 printer utilising pigments as opposed to inks. This gives a greater degree of image stability over time. The paper surface is Premium Luster Photo Paper. This is a satin/ pearl  finish, ideal for display purposes. It is resistant to fingerprint marking and offers a low sheen reflectance of ambient light. This paper has a weight of 235 GSM and a display permanence rating of 95 years when displayed under glass and more than 100 years when displayed under Ultra violet  filtering glass. The State Library does not offer any other paper surfaces for supply of digital prints. (Note: The Library ceased to offer analogue chemical processed photographic prints in January 2004.)

Black and White

Applicable only to the print output, select this option if you wish to have a black and white (greyscale) image. The print is very similar to that of an analogue black and white print. The image would typically be captured in RGB colour and then converted to greyscale before printing.

Colour

If you choose colour, the print will reproduce the majority of tones and colours in the original. For example, the yellow tones of degraded newsprint will be reproduced when copying from a yellowed newspaper.

Digital File

Digital files are supplied burnt to CD-ROM. All files are supplied as 300 ppi RGB (colour) TIFF files, formatted for PC.

All images are sized for an output at international paper sizes, therefore an:

  • A4 image @300dpi will be 24.9 Mb in size
  • A3 image @300dpi will be 49.8 Mb in size
  • A2 image @300dpi will be 99.6 Mb in size.

All images are supplied as large as the image format will permit up to the international paper size.
