The Independent Type: Books and Writing in Victoria

This free exhibition celebrates the stories, the voices and the spirit of independence that have made Victoria's literature unique. The Cowen Gallery

The Cross and the Matrix
A display of evocative works by Melbourne artist Bruno Leti, produced as a result of his Creative Fellowship at the State Library. They include paintings, photographs, prints and an artist's book, Journal of a Cross. Time: Until 9 August, daily during Library hours Venue: Cowen Gallery Free
A Panorama of Melbourne
This 12-metre panorama by artist Juan Davila was conceived while he was an Honorary Creative Fellow at the State Library. Literary subscriptions
Do you subscribe? Victoria's robust literary magazine culture provides readers with innovative fiction, drama, poetry, thinking, artistic miscellany and trouble-making. From early publications including Melbourne Punch to long-standing journals like Overland, Meanjin and Going Down Swinging, and the-next generation Torpedo and The Lifted Brow, this culture has nourished Australia's intellectual life. Join exhibition curator Stephen Grimwade (former editor of Going Down Swinging) with journal editors Chris Flynn and Peter Rose for a fascinating discussion of literary journals in Victoria. Script: Writing for stage and screen
Victoria has produced some great scriptwriting – from the world's first feature-length film, Ned Kelly, to vibrant theatre productions at La Mama and the Pram Factory, and popular TV shows like Homicide and Neighbours. Join playwright Joanna Murray-Smith, La Mama founder Betty Burstall and TV comedy writer Mark O'Toole for a lively discussion of scriptwriting in Victoria. Freeplay
An independent games festival that focuses on the creative aspects of game-making. The event is designed for all members of the independent games community - professional and hobbyist developers, educators, multimedia students, and artists working with interactive and digital media. The two-day conference is packed with opportunities to explore theories, share new ideas, debate and take part in workshops and panel sessions. Presented in association with Next Wave. Outside-In Cinema: 'Howl' and Patti
