The Independent Type: Books and Writing in Victoria
Turn the pages of Victoria’s literary history, from the first stories to the contemporary scene. This free exhibition celebrates our rich and diverse written culture, highlighting the stories, the voices and the spirit of independence that have made Victoria’s literature unique. The Cowen Gallery

The Cross and the Matrix
A display of evocative works by Melbourne artist Bruno Leti, produced as a result of his Creative Fellowship at the State Library. They include paintings, photographs, prints and an artist’s book, Journal of a Cross. Time: Until 9 August, daily during Library hours Venue: Cowen Gallery Free
A Panorama of Melbourne
This 12-metre panorama by artist Juan Davila was conceived while he was an Honorary Creative Fellow at the State Library. It traces the evolution of Melbourne’s built environment, from early Indigenous homes through to a futuristic vision. Time: Until 9 August, daily during Library hours Venue: Cowen Gallery Free

Word juggling: poetry and performance
A celebration of freestylin’ word-spinners, perceptive poetry and spoken-word wizardry. View from the outside: Migrant stories
Since the earliest days of European settlement, Victoria has become a strange new home to successive waves of migrants. Explore the migrant experience and connection with place in Victorian literature, with a panel of first and second-generation Australian writers, including Raimond Gaita, Amra Pajalic and Arnold Zable. Water Histories: Lessons for Australia in a changing climate
What can we learn from Australian history that might help us deal with our water crisis and climate change today? Michael Cathcart, from the Australia Centre at the University of Melbourne, will draw lessons from his new book, Water Dreamers: How Water and Silence Made Australia. Paul Sinclair, Healthy Ecosystems Program Manager, Australian Conservation Foundation, will discuss his current work and previous research on the Murray River and its people. This event is part of the Making Public Histories series, presented in partnership with the History Council of Victoria and the Monash University Institute for Public History. Tertiary transformers
Several universities and TAFE institutions have made significant changes to the structure and delivery of their courses in the last few years. This has often been matched with changes to the physical design of spaces, to make them more engaging for students. What are the underlying principles of these changes, and what kind of learning is now occurring? Carnegie Down Under: A century of the Dunedin Public Library (The 2009 Foxcroft Lecture)
Mary Ronnie, one of New Zealand’s most distinguished librarians, will give an insightful account of the history of the Dunedin Public Library, with which she has been involved since the 1930s. She was Dunedin City Librarian from 1968 to 1976, and has also held the positions of National Librarian of New Zealand, Auckland City Librarian and Head of the Graduate Department of Librarianship, Archives and Records, at Monash University. The annual Foxcroft Lecture honours the work of pioneering Melbourne bibliographer AB Foxcroft (1884–1938). This event is presented in partnership with the Centre for the Book, Monash University. Music and dance on film
Enjoy free screenings of classic music and dance performances. On 3 June, La Bayadere is Rudolf Nureyev's production for the Ballet de l'Opera de Paris of this wonderful ballet set in exotic India. It features music by Ludwig Minkus, and performers Isabelle Guerin and Laurent Hilaire, with Orchestre Colonne, conducted by Michel Queval. On 17 June, two films are offered: at 12 noon, Gaite Parisienne features the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, filmed at various performances in the 1940s. At 12.40pm, Dancing in the Light showcases six historic dance compositions by African-American choreographers, with performaces by Bill T Jones and the Arnie Zane Dance Company (concludes 1.35pm). Press Play: The Web 2.0 world

Outside-In Cinema: Annie Leibovitz and Spirited Away
See contemporary documentaries and animation on the big screen in Experimedia. BYO snacks and drinks (non-alcoholic). On 10 June, Annie Leibovitz: Life Through a Lens reveals how photographer Annie Leibovitz has produced some of the most iconic images of the last 30 years (M, 2006, 83 minutes). On 24 June, Spirited Away is a wondrous fantasy about a girl named Chihiro who discovers a secret world of strange creatures, spirits and sorcery (PG, 2004, 125 minutes). The Melbourne Prize for Literature – entries now open
The $60,000 Melbourne Prize for Literature 2009 and $30,000 Best Writing Award 2009 will recognise and reward excellence in Victorian writing across all genres. Entries close on 17 July, and finalists will be announced on 16 September and displayed at Federation Square in November.
