The Independent Type: Books and Writing in Victoria

Turn the pages of Victoria's literary history, from the first stories to the contemporary scene. This free exhibition celebrates our rich and diverse written culture, highlighting the stories, the voices and the spirit of independence that have made Victoria's literature unique.

The Cowen Gallery

Bruno Leti: The Cross and the Matrix

A display of evocative works by Melbourne artist Bruno Leti, produced as a result of his Creative Fellowship at the State Library. They include paintings, photographs, prints and an artist's book, Journal of a Cross.

Juan Davila: A Panorama of Melbourne

This 12-metre panorama by artist Juan Davila was conceived while he was an Honorary Creative Fellow at the State Library. It traces the evolution of Melbourne's built environment, from early Indigenous homes through to a futuristic vision.

My land, my stories

Indigenous Victorians have always communicated their connection to the land and each other through stories, art and dance. Celebrate the living cultural landscape of Aboriginal Victorians in a weekend of activities and performances.

  • Healing the Spirit – My possum-skin cloak: Join artist Vicki Couzens of the Gunditjmara and Kirrae Whurrong clans to learn how possum-skin cloaks tell stories of land, family and identity (Sat & Sun, 1–2pm).
  • Join and Unite: See the Jindi Worobak Dance Troupe performing Wurundjeri dances (Sat, 3–4pm).
  • Dreamtime Stories: Join Wamba Wamba man and storyteller Ron Murray for traditional dreaming stories of the south-eastern tribes (Sun, 3–4pm).

Remembering Australia's Great War

How are our history and memory of the Great War changing? Join a panel of authors chaired by Alistair Thomson (Anzac Memories), with Marina Larsson (Shattered Anzacs: Living with the Scars of War), Bart Ziino (A Distant Grief: Australians, War Graves and the Great War) and Ross McMullin (Pompey Elliot and Will Dyson: Australia’s Radical Genius). This event is presented in partnership with the Monash University Institute for Public History and the History Council of Victoria.

Music and dance on film: Sylvia and The Flying Dutchman

Enjoy free screenings of classic music and dance performances. On 8 April, see Sylvia, an elegant ballet based on a Greek myth, featuring music by Delibes, choreography by Frederick Ashton and Darcey Bussell as Sylvia, performed at Covent Garden for the 75th anniversary of the Royal Ballet. On 22 April, enjoy an acclaimed production of Wagner's opera The Flying Dutchman, filmed in performance at the Bayreuth Festival in 1985.

Outside-In Cinema: Lou Reed and Totoro

View contemporary documentaries and animated films on the big screen in Experimedia. BYO snacks and drinks (non-alcoholic). On Wednesday 15 April, Lou Reed’s Berlin (PG, 2008, 87 mins) captures the performance of Reed's 1973 album Berlin over five nights at St Ann's Warehouse, Brooklyn. On Wednesday 29 April, My Neighbour Totoro (G, 1988, 86 mins) tells the story of two girls, Satsuki and Mei, who discover they share their home with some unusual creatures and even stranger neighbours.

Secrets of the State Library

In this one-day workshop, children will tour the Library to discover its secrets, then write, illustrate and narrate a digital story inspired by what they've learnt, and take it home on DVD. (For ages 8 to 14; each participant receives a copy of the book National Treasures from Australia’s Great Libraries.)

Ned Kelly for kids
