Buckley! A theatrical performance

Take a journey into Victoria’s history. Presented by Jan ‘Yarn’ Wositzky from the Storyteller’s Guide to the World, Buckley! tells the story of escaped convict William Buckley, who lived with the Wathaurong Indigenous people for 32 years and played a part in the establishment of Melbourne. This lively performance brings history to life with music, poetry and storytelling. Includes a one-hour tour of the exhibition The changing face of Victoria. Suitable for Years 5–10.

Juicy Writing: A workshop for teachers, with Brigid Lowry

If you work with teenagers, this workshop will help you connect with their creativity – and your own. Juicy Writing, Brigid Lowry’s new guide to creative writing, is a treasure-trove of inspiration and practical advice for teenagers, full of writing tricks, ideas and techniques to pass on to students. Brigid Lowry is an award-winning writer whose books include Guitar Highway Rose, Tomorrow All Will Be Beautiful and With Lots of Love from Georgia (all published by Allen & Unwin). Morning tea will be served.

The changing face of Victoria: Exhibition tour for school groups

Students will be guided in the exhibition to develop an understanding of the arrival of white settlers in Victoria, and of the land's earlier inhabitants. They will view Ned Kelly’s original armour and discover unique Melbourne stories.
All year levels, 1 hour, $4 per student

Mirror of the World: Exhibition tour for school groups

In the exhibition Mirror of the World: books and ideas, students will discover the evolution of printing, book production and design. Highlights include Audubon’s magnificent Birds of America, the 19th-century Midget Library and books that have changed the world.
All year levels, 1 hour, $4 per student

Sport and War: Exhibition tour for school groups

This tour will reveal how sport has played a key role in shaping Australia’s identity, particularly during wartime. Students will see unique artefacts from the Australian War Memorial and hear stories about the wartime recruitment of sportsmen and women, the Changi ‘Brownlow’ medal and Australia’s most successful wicket-keeper, Bert Oldfield.
All year levels, 45 minutes, $3 per student

Library orientation tour

This popular tour is an ideal way for students to engage with the impressive spaces and learn about the history of the Library, a Melbourne cultural icon that opened in 1856 and now holds around four million collection items. Students will learn how to register as Library users, and how to use services and facilities including Experimedia and the Arts, Newspapers and Redmond Barry reading rooms. Highlights include the famous domed La Trobe Reading Room and the Cowen Gallery’s display of historic artworks.
All year levels, 45 minutes, $3 per student

Burke and Wills workshop

This hands-on workshop will help students to comprehend the mammoth Victorian Exploring Expedition of 1860 and to develop an understanding of outback survival skills. Students will hear the story of Burke and Wills and see original artefacts from their historic journey. After discussing what makes an effective explorer, and hearing about modern-day explorer Jon Muir’s trek to the Gulf, students will choose ten items they would take on an outback adventure today.
Years 3–6, 90 minutes, $6 per student

Make your own book

In this inspiring workshop, students will see books of many sizes and formats displayed in the exhibition Mirror of the World: books and ideas, and will then create their own book in an accordion or pamphlet-stitch style, using templates provided.
Years 5–6, 2 hours, $8 per student

Medieval calligraphy workshop

Students will view a demonstration of illuminated manuscript production and visit the exhibition Mirror of the World: books and ideas to discover the development of books and writing over the centuries. They will then be introduced to the art of calligraphy and make their own ‘illuminated manuscript’ page to take home.
Years 5–9, 2 hours, $8 per student

Super-sleuthing workshop

Students will become history sleuths in this interactive workshop. In a guided tour of the Library, students will learn about key characters from Victoria’s early years, and will then be given clues to discover the identity of a mystery character. Using the resources within the Library’s Genealogy Centre, including microfiche, databases and reference books, students will research their character while developing their information literacy skills. Students will come away with prizes as well as a taste for research and family history!
Years 5–6, 90 minutes, $6 per student

Puzzling Melbourne

Discover how Melbourne grew from an illegal settlement into a flourishing township. Guided through the exhibition The changing face of Victoria, students will discover central characters and events in the birth of Melbourne. Using jigsaw pieces that identify key artefacts, they will investigate parts of the story of Melbourne and then regroup to present their findings and put the puzzle together. The completed jigsaw can be taken back to school.
Years 7–10, 90 minutes, $6 per student

The Hoddle Waddle

Students will encounter historical and cultural sites in Melbourne’s CBD and use teamwork skills to find clues and discover locations. They will then present an account of their journey, using Photo Story software and their own photographs.
Years 9–10, full day, $12 per student (subsidised price for regional Year 9 students through ArtsConnect9)
