Victorians on Vacation
This delightful free exhibition celebrates holidays and leisure in Victoria since the mid-19th century – from sea-bathing in St Kilda to bush-camping and caravanning. It showcases historical and contemporary photographs, postcards, travel posters and guidebooks from the State Library's collection, plus a slide show and nostalgic home movies. Time: Until 2 March 2008, 10am–5pm daily (to 9pm Thursdays) Venue: Keith Murdoch Gallery Free
The changing face of Victoria
This fascinating exhibition highlights the people, places and events that have shaped life in Victoria over 200 years. Revisit Victoria's early years, view Ned Kelly’s original armour, and discover Melbourne stories and personalities. Time: 10am–5pm daily Venue: Dome Galleries, Level 5 Free
Mirror of the World: books and ideas
This magnificent exhibition showcases rare, beautiful and historically significant books from the Library’s collections. See treasures such as Audubon’s magnificent Birds of America, classic children’s books and 1950s pulp crime fiction. Time: 10am–5pm daily Venue: Dome Galleries, Level 4 Free
The Cowen Gallery
The elegant Cowen Gallery features a display of 150 works of art from the Library’s Pictures Collection, from early scenes of Melbourne to contemporary portraits. Time: Daily during Library hours Venue: Cowen Gallery Free

Family fun on Australia Day!
Enjoy an afternoon of free family activities and celebrate the beach holiday of the 1950s, 60s and 70s! Try your hand at mini-golf, bocce and quoits, peg your flag on the Hills hoist, and be entertained by the Wacky Music Comedy Quartet’s ‘Musica Aquatica’ and ‘Wacky Winterland’ performances. There’s free fun for kids, including story-writing and flag-making, and everyone is welcome to ‘slip, slop, slap’ and pose for a holiday snap outside our caravan. Join a free, guided, half-hour tour of the Victorians on Vacation exhibition (12.30 and 2.30pm), or just relax in a deckchair and listen to readings from The Summer Read program. Greetings from… Holiday snapshots
Fake a fabulous holiday postcard to impress your friends! Just choose an outfit, then pose in front of our caravan and take home a postcard-style print to show off. Wish you were here! Online photo competition
Got some great Victorian holiday photos? Enter our competition (kids’ or adults’ section) and win a digital camera! Whether they’re snapshots from your mobile phone or faded prints in an album, dig them out and share your best holiday moments with the world. Entries close 2 March. Free

Ned Kelly’s laptop
Visit the exhibition The changing face of Victoria to view Ned Kelly’s original armour from the siege of Glenrowan in 1880. Explore how Kelly’s story has been presented over the years – from original photographs and records of the time to the laptop on which Peter Carey wrote The True Story of the Kelly Gang. Followed by an optional half-hour children’s activity, making a replica of Ned’s helmet. The Summer Read
Immerse yourself in a great Victorian book with the Library’s holiday reading program. Choose from the list of 20 recommended titles, then vote for your favourite and be in the running to win great prizes. Participate in events at public libraries and share your opinions online. Free
Play Pod: Free fun for kids
In the colourful and kid-friendly Play Pod space in Experimedia, children aged 3 to 5 can dip into favourite story-books anytime. Other activities include card-making, story-writing and making a replica of Ned Kelly’s helmet – just ask the staff member on duty for activity materials. School Holiday Activities
Make a model caravan!
After visiting the Victorians on Vacation exhibition, young children can make their own model caravan to take home. Visit the Play Pod and request the caravan activity pack. Time: 7–20 January, 10am–5pm daily Venue: Experimedia Bookings: Not required Free
Super action storytelling!
Hear storyteller Bernard Caleo’s entertaining reading of the classic adventure story Tom Sawyer in the morning, and then return for a fun afternoon workshop. Each child will create a digital picture-book, complete with their own illustrations and narration! (For ages 5–12; parents must accompany children.) Imaginary postcards: Animation workshop
A fun, one-day program for kids aged 7–12. Create an animated ‘postcard’ about your fantasy holiday, using collaging techniques and your own narration. Squash time and space together as you travel to Victorian holiday spots of the past and future, and take a DVD home to keep. Are we there yet? Video workshop
An exciting one-day activity for kids aged 7 to 12. Make a video about your favourite holiday, using a digital camera, paper cutouts and Stop Motion animation software.
