Famous: Karin Catt portraits

This free exhibition presents striking celebrity portraits by high-profile Australian photographer Karin Catt. These iconic images of famous faces, from hip-hop artist Eminem to Mikhail Gorbachev, evoke the world of popular culture seen in the pages of Vogue and Rolling Stone. (A National Portrait Gallery touring exhibition.)

This fascinating exhibition highlights the people, places and events that have shaped life in Victoria over 200 years. Revisit Victoria's early years, view Ned Kelly’s original armour, and discover Melbourne stories and personalities.

Mirror of the World: books and ideas

This magnificent exhibition showcases rare, beautiful and historically significant books from the Library’s collections. See treasures such as the rare Second Folio of Shakespeare, classic children’s books and 1950s pulp crime fiction.

The Cowen Gallery

The elegant Cowen Gallery features a display of 150 works of art from the Library’s Pictures Collection. The works illustrate Victoria’s landscape, early Melbourne scenes and the European exploration and settlement of Australia.

A lively discussion with Stephanie Wood, Deputy Editor, The Melbourne Magazine; Deborah Thomas, Editor, Women’s Weekly; Bronwyn Kidd, fashion photographer; Jason Grant, stylist and Melbourne Contributing Editor, INSIDEout magazine and Jane Hutchinson, Melbourne Editor, Sunday Magazine, Herald Sun/Sunday Telegraph. Digital Forum: Reconstructed archaeology – Virtual history

The educational multimedia industry finds itself competing with computer games to engage young minds. Students expect advanced visuals and interactivity – even when it comes to learning about ancient history! Thomas Chandler, a lecturer in information technology at Monash University, will demonstrate 3D graphic and animation research and discuss the educational potential of interactive virtual spaces.

Video Killed the Radio Star

Musical Treasures: Music by Peggy Glanville-Hicks

The final in a series of three concerts showcasing rare original music from the Library’s collection, and featuring the work of former Creative Fellows Marshall McGuire and Richard Divall. Featuring Peggy Glanville-Hicks' Harp Sonata (1951), the final scene from the opera Sappho (1965), and Letters from Morocco (1952). Performed by Marshall McGuire (harp, piano), Suzanne Johnston (mezzo-soprano) and George Laikatos (tenor), and introduced by Richard Divall. Original manuscripts and related material will be on display.

Sondheim and Ella: Music videos

Company: The Making of the Original Cast Album is an extraordinary documentary about the original Broadway-cast recording session for the album of the hit ’70s musical Company by Stephen Sondheim. The Merry Widow: Music video

A sparkling performance of Lehar’s three-act ballet, featuring Lisa Pavane, Steven Heathcote, Rebecca Yates, David McAllister and artists of the Australian Ballet. With the State Orchestra of Victoria, conducted by Noel Smith. Artistic Director Maina Gielgud; scenario and staging by Robert Helpmann. Recorded at the Victorian Arts Centre in 1993.

A Play on Words: Mr Bleak and the Etryop

Horrible Mr Bleak is up against the word players – the wily Word Collector, the Sharpies, the Jolly Vowels, and the Mat that Sat on the Cat. Making a Scene: Digital animation

Make a scene these holidays and create an animated movie to take home! In this one-day workshop, children will work together to write a story, then use simple software to animate each section. Each child will receive a copy on CD to take home. (For ages 7–13.)
