Booktalkers for Teenagers: Outside the comfort zone
Meet popular writers Bill Condon (Dare Devils), Pat Flynn (The Line Formation) and Julia Lawrinson (Bye, Beautiful). Hear stories of discovery and hope, with performances based on the novels. Not All Readers Are Reluctant
A professional learning opportunity for teacher and teacher-librarians. A lot of time and effort goes into developing programs to support reluctant readers – but what about passionate readers? How do we challenge and extend them? Enjoy a day of engaging talks and presentations by experienced teachers and school librarians, an editor of books for young people, a 15-year-old published author, and a panel of secondary students. Famous: Karin Catt portraits – Exhibition tour for school groups
Students will enjoy a guided tour of the exhibition Famous: Karin Catt portraits, an impressive display of photographic portraits of celebrities – from rock stars to political leaders. In discussion, they will consider the power of portraits, the meaning of identity and celebrity, and techniques of styling and presentation in photography. All year levels, 1 hour, $4 per student
Put Yourself In the Picture!
Students will visit the exhibition Famous: Karin Catt Portraits to view an impressive range of celebrity photographs, then create their own self-portraits, using a gilt-edged frame, backdrops and props provided. Each student's portrait will be printed, and the class can compile an album to keep. Years 5-8, 2 hours, $8 per student
The changing face of Victoria: Exhibition tour for school groups
Students will be guided in the exhibition to develop an understanding of the arrival of white settlers in Victoria, and of the land's earlier inhabitants. They will view Ned Kelly’s original armour and explore what has made Melbourne unique, including the 1956 Olympics and Melbourne subcultures. All year levels, 1 hour, $4 per student
Mirror of the World: Exhibition tour for school groups
In the exhibition Mirror of the World: books and ideas, students will discover the evolution of printing and the book. Highlights include Audubon’s magnificent Birds of America and literary classics from the 13th to the 21st century. All year levels, 1 hour, $4 per student
Puzzling Melbourne
Students will visit the Library's exhibition The changing face of Victoria to discover how Melbourne changed from an illegal settlement to a flourishing township. Using 'jigsaw' pieces that identify key artefacts, they will investigate aspects of Melbourne's story, then put the whole puzzle together. Years 7-10 (History), 90 minutes, $6 per student
Questioning the World: Critical literacy
Using the Library’s newspaper resources on microfilm, students are encouraged to become critically literate by investigating how a single event is represented in different newspapers, both Australian and international. Teachers may nominate a particular event to be the focus for this exercise. Years 7-10 (English), 90 minutes, $6 per student
Keeping It Reel
Truth is stranger than fiction! This program uses the Library's vast newspaper collection (on microfilm) to inspire students to become fiction writers. They will search newspapers for an article or image to spark their imagination, as a starting-point to writing a short story back at school. Years 7-10 (English), 90 minutes, $6 per student
On This Day ...
Everyone loves their birthday! Students will find the local newspaper from their birth date, then scan and save a copy of the paper's front page to take home. This is a fun way to get to know the Library's Newspaper Collection. Years 3-6 (English), 1 hour, $4 per student
