Famous: Karin Catt portraits

This free exhibition presents striking celebrity portraits by high-profile Australian photographer Karin Catt. These iconic images of famous faces, from hip-hop artist Eminem to Mikhail Gorbachev, evoke the world of popular culture seen in the pages of Vogue and Rolling Stone. (A National Portrait Gallery touring exhibition.)

The changing face of Victoria

This fascinating exhibition highlights the people, places and events that have shaped life in Victoria over 200 years. Revisit Victoria's early years, view Ned Kelly’s original armour, and discover the 1956 Olympics, Melbourne subcultures and more.

Mirror of the World: books and ideas

This magnificent exhibition showcases rare, beautiful and historically significant books from the Library’s collections. See treasures such as the rare Second Folio of Shakespeare, classic children’s books and 1950s pulp crime fiction.

The Cowen Gallery

The elegant Cowen Gallery features a display of 150 works of art from the Library’s Pictures Collection. The works illustrate Victoria’s landscape, early Melbourne scenes and the European exploration and settlement of Australia.

Digital Forum: Meeting 21st-century library users' expectations

Libraries are redefining themselves, operating within a transitional technological environment while facing increasing demands for fast information delivery. The State Library of Victoria's 'slv21' program aims to provide Victorians with the best possible experience of accessing trusted information on Victoria’s cultural and documentary heritage. Ian Patterson, Chief Technology Specialist at the Library, will discuss current and future directions.

The Secret Life of Gamers

Recent hype in the media has made many parents wonder what their kids are actually doing online. Find out why kids play 'massively-multiplayer online role-playing games' (MMORG). Second Life is a 3D online, virtual world which is created and owned by its ‘residents’. Hear players describe the excitement of creating their own virtual identity. World of Warcraft is an online role-playing game set in the award-winning Warcraft universe where players undertake heroic quests and interact with thousands of other participants.

Family History Feast

Learn about key genealogy resources for family history research at free information sessions, and hear the Don Grant Lecture. This annual event, part of National Family History Week, is presented by Public Record Office Victoria; National Archives of Australia (Victorian Office); Victorian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages; the Victorian Association of Family History Organisations; and the State Library of Victoria.

Musical Treasures: String quartet music

The second in a series of three concerts showcasing rare original music from the Library’s collection, and featuring the work of former Creative Fellow Richard Divall. Featuring String quartet No 1 in C major (Charles Edward Horsley, 1862), and String quartet, Op 119 in G major (Fritz Hart, 1837), performed by the Curro Quartet. Original manuscripts and other relevant collection material will be on display.

Vaudeville in Melbourne between the wars

Hear playwright Lally Katz and director Chris Kohn discuss their new play, about Melbourne's lively vaudeville scene in the Edwardian era, which they researched during their 2006 joint Creative Fellowship at the State Library. Commissioned by the Malthouse Theatre, and intended for production in 2009, the play focuses on the theatres and artists of the city's 1913–14 Vaudeville milieu. This talk is part of the State Library's Fellows' Lecture Series – free talks by writers, artists and scholars undertaking research fellowships at the State Library of Victoria.

Video Killed the Radio Star

Play Pod: Activities for kids

In the colourful and kid-friendly Play Pod space in Experimedia, children aged 3-5 can dip into favourite story-books anytime. For a more structured activity, ask for the Make a Book Box to create your own book, or the Ned Helmet Box to make your own Ned Kelly helmet to take home. (Young children should be supervised by an adult.)
