Guidelines and Application Form

The AGL Shaw Summer Research Fellowships are awarded annually by the State Library. Three Fellowships will be offered in January and February 2009 for periods of four weeks. Two Fellowships are for postgraduate students resident in Melbourne, with a stipend of $1200. A third Fellowship will be awarded to a student from regional Victoria, for whom the stipend will be $1200, plus a living-away-from-home allowance.

Fellowship requirements

Successful applicants will be required to:

  • take up Fellowships for four weeks in the two-month period of January and February 2009
  • make significant use of the resources of the State Library of Victoria
  • spend their research time at the State Library of Victoria
  • give a presentation of the results of their research and provide a written report of their Summer Fellowship.

Selection process

The AGL Shaw Fellowships will be awarded on the advice of an independent committee of the Library Board of Victoria to applicants whose research is centred on the resources of the Library. Selection is based on written application only. The application must include the names of three referees.

The Library's collections

The State Library is Victoria's major reference and research library. Its collections draw together a wide range of materials in all fields of knowledge. Those collections which reflect the cultural and social history of Victoria are an incredibly rich resource for scholars.

Its special collections - Australian Manuscripts, Pictures, Arts, Children's Literature, Rare Books, Maps and Newspapers - are particularly important for researchers. Many rare and unusual artefacts of great historical significance are held in these collections, such as Ned Kelly's 'Jerilderie Letter' and suit of armour, John Batman's journal and a leaf of the Gutenberg Bible.
