About Professor AGL Shaw
Emeritus Professor Alan George Lewers Shaw AO was Professor of History at Monash University from 1964 to 1981. He is Associate Editor (Australia) of the New Dictionary of National Biography, a position he has held since 1994. A doyen of Australian history, his best-known published works include A History of the Port Phillip District (1996), Gipps-La Trobe Correspondence, 1839-1846, Editor (1989), and Sir George Arthur, 1784-1854: A biography (1980).
Professer Shaw was a founding member of the Committee of the Friends of the La Trobe Library, now the State Library of Victoria Foundation, and a member of the Library Council of Victoria from 1976 to 1985. He was President of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria from 1987 to 1991, and President of the C J La Trobe Society from 2002 to 2004.
