The Getting of Wisdom
 |
A wicked and satirical story. Richardson’s experience living in various towns in Victoria during her childhood and youth, and attending the Presbyterian Ladies' College in Melbourne, was the basis for this fine coming of age novel. In a letter to Richardson, HG Wells declared, ‘..your little rag of a girl is a most adorable little beast.’

AuthorHenry Handel Richardson
Henry Handel Richardson was named Ethel Florence Lindesay Richardson when she was born in 1870, but later took a man’s name to disprove the popular belief that a woman’s writing was distinguishable from a man’s. Her important place in Australian literature was secured by her most popular novels, the semi-autobiographical The Getting of Wisdom and The Fortunes of Richard Mahony.

Who loved this book?Germaine Greer, author
The enduring truth is that The Getting of Wisdom is Richardson’s only great book, precisely because the subject is, like the rest of us, ordinary, and therefore deeply important.
