Tony Birch is a storyteller. The collection of fictional stories in Shadowboxing is written from the streets of Fitzroy as he knew them. He gets into the back rooms of a suburb which today the casual visitor could be forgiven for thinking had gone all cutting-edge retro and dreads and flowing chocolate. Tony doesn’t waste ink shifting pretty words across a page. His writing is sparse in a way that lets the story do its own work, leaving room for readers to air-box, shaping up to a toughness of experience that would land many on the canvas. Tony’s style of boxing, on the other hand, is barefoot, telling it in a voice that is no stranger to the streets.
