Helen Garner, born in Geelong, has published critically acclaimed fiction and non-fiction since 1977. Her bestselling first novel, Monkey Grip, was followed by short story collections, screenplays and the novels The Children’s Bach and Cosmo Cosmolino. Her non-fiction work - The First Stone and more recently Joe Cinque’s Consolation - is the source of robust debate. She was recently awarded the Melbourne Prize for Literature, 2006.
