What's your favourite work of fiction set in Victoria?

Illywhacker by Peter Carey. A huge, daring, brag of a book that gallops around Victoria’s Western District. It is wonderfully wry and surprising.

Which Victorian writer do you admire the most?

The poet John Shaw Neilson (1872-1942). Neilson was an unschooled farmer and roadmender who lived in the Mallee for many years. He is sometimes called the poet of the colours. Neilson was tuned to the bush in a very rare way. Unmarried and unwell for much of his life, he knew a great deal about love and longing.

Where do you like to do your reading in Victoria?

Anywhere and everywhere. Bed is good. In the bath is good. And I like to read on the train on the way to work.

What do you believe is the best film adaptation of a Victorian book?

Novels and films are two different artforms. Most of my favourite Victorian films didn’t start out as novels. (Love Serenade, Malcolm, Death in Brunswick, Man of Flowers, Proof...)

What is your most treasured memory of a public library?

I’ve just returned from doing some research at the British Library in London. It is by far the biggest library I have ever been in – a kind of city of books within the city of London. But it is also very efficient and well-run. The reader really came first.

What is your best holiday read?

Flaubert’s Madame Bovary is sublime – a great jag of sadness. I love E.L. Doctorow, especially The Lives of the Poets, and anything by Australian writers Gail Jones, David Malouf and Brian Castro. This summer I am also planning to read some Freud and some poetry by Canadian poet Anne Carson.
