The inaugural Reading Victoria summer reading program, held over summer 2006-07, explored a sense of place - one of the most important elements in many works of fiction. It took as its theme 20 Novels Set Close to Home, with the shortlist reflecting many of the interesting places in the state that have been written about in some of our most loved books.
The books that received the most votes from readers were:
- Three Dollars by Elliot Perlman
- The Dressmaker by Rosalie Ham
- My Brother Jack by George Johnston
- Picnic at Hanging Rock by Joan Lindsay
- Shadow Boxing by Tony Birch.
Getting involved
There were several different ways you could get involved in the 2006-07 summer reading program:
- vote for your favourite book
- contribute your opinions about our recommended titles and discuss summer reading ideas with other readers on the blog (this blog is no longer live)
