The Prize for Young Adult Fiction: Judges 2007
Agnes Nieuwenhuizen (Convenor)
Agnes Nieuwenhuizen is a noted advocate of books and reading for teenagers, winning the Dromkeen Medal in 1994 for services to children's and young adult literature. She has written and spoken extensively on the subject, and worked with a range of organisations to set up youth literature programs. In 1999 she founded the Centre for Youth Literature at the State Library of Victoria and was its manager until her retirement in 2005. Her new book, Right Book, Right Time, is a reading guide for young people, with over 500 recommendations.
Kathy Kozlowski
Kathy Kozlowski started her professional life as a children’s librarian before moving into the book trade in the early ‘70s, working for Albert Ullin at the Little Bookroom. A specialist children’s bookseller for many years, she has also worked as a school librarian and in children’s publishing. She has been a judge for the Children’s Literature section of the Australian Human Rights Awards and is passionate about the importance of story and imagination in sharing cultural values and building community. She was also a judge for the Prize for Young Adult Fiction in the 2006 Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards. Kathy is currently the Children’s Book Buyer at Readings, Carlton.
Bernie Monagle
A storyteller, writer, teacher and dramatist, Bernie Monagle has worked extensively in education, community and theatrical groups. Blue girl, yella fella was his first young adult novel. He is currently working on his fifth book.
