The John Curtin Prize for Journalism: Judges 2008

| Michael Gawenda (Convenor)Michael Gawenda is one of Australia’s best-known journalists and authors. In a journalism career spanning three decades, he has been a political reporter, a foreign correspondent based in London and in Washington, a columnist, a feature writer and an editor. Gawenda has won numerous journalism awards including three Walkley awards, the Australian equivalent of the American Pulitzer prizes. He began his journalism career at The Age in Melbourne in 1970. Michael Gawenda is the inaugural Director of the University of Melbourne Centre for the Advanced Study of Journalism and a columnist for The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald. American Notebook, A Personal and Political Journey, was published in August 2007 by Melbourne University Publishing. |

| Greg Hywood
Greg Hywood was appointed Deputy Secretary (Brand, Communications and Tourism) at the Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development in early 2008. He holds this position in conjunction with his role as Chief Executive, Tourism Victoria. Prior to this he was Executive Director, Policy & Cabinet with the Victorian Government’s Department of Premier and Cabinet. Gregory has worked in the media for three decades, and is one of the country's most experienced communications industry executives. He has held roles as editor, publisher and editor-in-chief of the Australian Financial Review; publisher and editor-in-chief of the Sydney Morning Herald and Sun Herald; publisher and editor-in-chief of The Age, and group publisher of Fairfax Magazines. |

| Richard WattsRichard Watts is the editor of Melbourne’s weekly newspaper for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community, MCV. He is also the producer/presenter of the weekly arts program 'SmartArts' on Three Triple R FM; and the Chair of the Melbourne Fringe Festival. His fiction and non-fiction has appeared in a range of publications in Australia and overseas. | |
