Poor Boy

Matt Cameron and Tim Finn
(Melbourne Theatre Company, Currency Press)

Poor Boy is a moody 'play with songs' that tells of death, children and past lives. The judges were impressed with the 'taut eloquence' of Matt Cameron’s dialogue, words that suggest rather than tell. The pre-existing songs come from the rich catalogue of singer/songwriter Tim Finn and, whilst not furthering the plot or necessarily commenting on the characters, help to create the mysterious feel of this play.

Shane Warne The Musical - WINNER

Eddie Perfect
(Token Events)

Eddie Perfect wrote music, lyrics and book and also starred as Shane Warne in this knockabout drama featuring the cricketing King of Spin. The musical has high energy and witty writing with some excellent lyrics and songs such as 'What an Smess I'm In' and 'Shine Like Shane' that both poke fun at the standard musical theatre form and yet give it new life.

Metro Street

Matthew Robinson
(Arts Asia Pacific, Power Arts and the State Theatre Company of South Australia)

Metro Street tells the stories of a number of intersecting characters living in the here and now of Australia. Matthew Robinson wrote the book, lyrics and music of a show that has a satisfying blend of drama and comedy, beautiful and poignant songs as well as humorous pastiche. The show also has some delightful ensemble vocal moments where four characters can simultaneously express different emotions.
