The Keith Murdoch Gallery features exhibitions drawn from the Library’s rich collections, as well as hosting significant touring exhibitions from other cultural institutions. Each exhibition is accompanied by an exciting program of talks, forums and events.
11 July - 26 October 2008 An inspiring free exhibition celebrating the role of sport and war in shaping Australia’s national identity. Discover remarkable stories of courage and achievement on the nation’s battlefields and sporting fields. Featuring original posters and photographs and a ‘Brownlow’ medal presented in Changi POW camp.
28 March - 15 June 2008 This spectacular free exhibition of medieval and Renaissance illuminated manuscripts celebrates the art of the hand-written book or manuscript. It features works from Cambridge University and its colleges, which together hold one of the greatest collections of medieval manuscripts in the western world.
30 November 2007 - 2 March 2008 This delightful free exhibition celebrates holidays and leisure in Victoria since the 19th century - from sea-bathing in St Kilda to bush-camping and caravanning. It showcases a fascinating selection of photographs, travel posters, postcards, a slide show and nostalgic home movies.
13 July - 11 November 2007 Famous presents striking celebrity portraits by high-profile Australian photographer Karin Catt. These iconic images of famous faces, from hip-hop artist Eminem to the Dalai Lama, evoke the world of popular culture seen in the pages of Vogue and Rolling Stone.
16 March - 17 June 2007 This free exhibition celebrates the arts of printmaking and the book with a stunning display of limited-edition prints and innovative hand-made artist books. This sumptuous display is bound to delight lovers of art, books and literature.
20 October 2006 - 25 February 2007 This free exhibition showcases the colourful history of Australian comics, from the 1940s to today. With a display of rare comic books, original artwork and memorabilia, it celebrates the characters that have entertained generations of Australians, from Captain Atom to Fatty Finn.
2 June - 1 October 2006 This free exhibition celebrates the 150th anniversary of self-government in Victoria, revisiting the highs and lows of Victorian democracy and politics. Exhibits include Fawkner’s 1835 draft constitution, political cartoons, protest banners, and Les Tanner’s 1972 caricature of Henry Bolte in the form of a coffee mug!
10 March - 7 May 2006 This major new travelling exhibition tells a rich and remarkable story about our history, our nation, our treasures…and our libraries. An extraordinary array of exhibits - both iconic and everyday - gives fresh insight into our past, and what it means to be Australian today.
18 November 2005 - 12 February 2006 Lost & Found presents paintings, prints, drawings and artists' books created by Peter Lyssiotis and John Wolseley during their Creative Fellowships at the State Library. These are displayed alongside rare books and pictures from the Library's collections which inspired the artists.
5 August - 30 October 2005 This travelling exhibition chronicles the historic Eureka rebellion on the Ballarat goldfields in 1854. It explores the many interpretations of the Eureka legend through a display of historic objects, modern artworks, photographs and memorabilia.
7 October 2004 - 26 June 2005 This stunning new exhibition presents a lively and entertaining look at two centuries of gardening in Australia and showcases unique items from the State Library’s collections – from rare books and exquisite botanical prints to photographs and journals of early Australian gardeners.
2 July - 19 September 2004 The year 1854 was a seminal one in the history of Victoria: the foundation stone of the State Library of Victoria was laid and the first edition of The Age appeared on the streets of Melbourne. To celebrate both their 150th anniversaries, the Library, in conjunction with The Age, has mounted this exhibition of the paper's most celebrated cartoonists.
12 March - 6 June 2004 Using material drawn from the Library's own collection, this exhibition explores Stephenson & Turner's contribution to the architectures of health and prosperity, and examines the pivotal role the firm played in importing and developing architectural modernism in Australia.
5 December 2003 - 29 February 2004 Leunig Animated brings to life the magical cartoons of Victorian cartoonist Michael Leunig. It explores his popular themes and how his work relates to his life, examines his irresistible humour, and displays all the poignancy of his work.
5 September - 23 November 2003 An exhibition of portrait and reportage photographs by Lewis Morley, spanning four decades with a focus on 'swinging sixties' London and 1970s Australia.
6 June - 24 August 2003 This unique exhibition draws together the work of some of Australia's leading contemporary artists who have explored the myriad meanings associated with the flower in their work.
28 February - 25 May 2003 This exhibition explores Australia's fascination with Edward 'Ned' Kelly and his enduring presence within our literature, visual arts, cinema, performing arts, music and popular culture.
