Paint and Gold in Illuminated Manuscripts: Methods and Meaning

In her own art, Dr Ursula Betka has revived the methods of gilding and painting used in the production of medieval manuscripts. Dr Betka discusses the ways in which medieval manuscripts were 'illuminated' in medieval Europe, and how colours, bindings and materials used in their production reflects on the manuscript itself.

A lecture held on 5 June 2008 at the State Library of Victoria, in association with the exhibition The Medieval Imagination.
