Medieval Faire Day

Be transported back to the Middle Ages at the State Library’s Medieval Faire – a day of free activities to entertain, inspire and delight the whole family!

The Middle Ages come alive! (Forecourt)

  • Sword fighting and squire school
  • Dancing, games, music and song
  • Living history: craft and culture demonstrations

Illumination and calligraphy demonstrations (Queens Hall)

See how an illuminated manuscript was created!

Boys and girls come out to play! (Experimedia)

  • Dress in costume for Your Medieval Portrait
  • Make a medieval crown or shield
  • Design your own coat-of-arms
  • Common court-esy – learn your medieval manners
  • It’s a crime – put your head in the stocks for a medieval punishment

Medieval chess tournament (Chess Room)

Learn the rules of medieval chess, then try your luck in the tournament.

The Medieval Imagination: free exhibition (Keith Murdoch Gallery)

Visit the exhibition and discover the rich beauty of medieval and Renaissance illuminated manuscripts.

Tales for the telling (Experimedia – meet on forecourt)

Watch a grand tale come to life!  See the Emperor of Byzantium inspecting his troops, then hear medieval tales from storyteller Jackie Kerrin.

Professor Margaret Manion AO, curator of the The Medieval Imagination, shares the challenges and rewards of mounting this landmark exhibition.

The enchanting sounds of the Early Music Consort, performing on medieval instruments.

Handbells ringing in the dome (La Trobe Reading Room)

A rare and atmospheric performance of handbells under the Library’s famous dome.

In the company of dragons: Carole Wilkinson (Village Roadshow Theatrette)

The popular author of Dragonkeeper, Dragon Moon and Dragon Companion – an Encyclopedia discusses her work.

Medieval mythbusters (Village Roadshow Theatrette)

From Vikings to the Da Vinci Code – Andy Muirhead, host of the ABC’s The Collectors, and a panel of experts debunk some common medieval misconceptions.
