Conference: Imagination, books and community in medieval Europe

An international conference at the State Library of Victoria, 29-31 May 2008

This international conference will examine the role of the manuscript book in nurturing both the imagination and a sense of community in medieval Europe, focusing on continuities between medieval and early modern visual, intellectual and religious culture.

Places are still available for 'Openings', the free public lecture by Professor Jeffrey Hamburger on Thursday 29 May. Due to public demand, the venue for this lecture has changed and it will now be held at 7pm at Storey Hall, RMIT, 342 Swanston St.

Program and registration

The conference will consider themes including music and liturgy, devotion and the saints, looking at manuscripts from all over Europe, their origins, influences and the rich stories that they tell.

Conference speakers will include distinguished international guests along with many Australian authorities, examining the art, impact and associations of the manuscript book in medieval Europe.

The conference is organised by the State Library of Victoria in partnership with the ARC Network for Early European Research, Monash University, La Trobe University and the Melbourne College of Divinity, with support from the Gordon Darling Foundation.
