THE GETTING OF WISDOM

'Crafty men contemn [have contempt for] studies; simple men admire them; and wise men use them'. (Francis Bacon) Thus quoted Arthur Stephenson in a letter to his staff about the value of study to develop architectural design solutions.

The firm was to prove its wisdom in 'making use of study' by drawing on the fruits of innumerable research tours over the years, to transform every facet of its business practice and architectural design work. Extensive overseas travel and information gathering formed a foundation for the company's ability to innovate and draw on outside resources and knowledge for problem solving through design.

Arthur Stephenson took over a dozen trips, and he encouraged colleagues and acquaintances to undertake similar research endeavours. Findings were disseminated widely through published articles and reports, public speaking and, of course throughout the architectural practice.

Stephenson & Turner was one of the first Australian architectural firms to establish an in-house technical library which was professionally managed and stocked with specialist overseas journals and books. The library also housed many architectural drawings by overseas architects, collected during the course of numerous research tours.
