Hothouse: The Flower in Contemporary Art

The Island (detail)

6 June - 24 August 2003

This unique exhibition draws together the work of some of Australia's leading contemporary artists, including Lauren Berkowitz, Christopher Langton, Tim Maguire, Rosslynd Piggott, Anne Wallace and Louise Weaver, all of whom have explored the myriad meanings associated with the flower in their work. Whether a symbol of birth or death, of sensuality, eroticism or romance, the flower remains a subject of enduring fascination for artists.  Hothouse also features a selection of rare books, photographs and ephemera from the State Library of Victoria's extraordinary collections.
