thinly timbere the Grass was
mostly 3 and 4 feet High and as
thick as it could lay on the Ground
the land quite Black, we
we walked about 8 mils
when we fell in with the tracks
of the Natives, and shortly after
came up with a family, One
Chief his Wife & 3 Children, I
gave Him a Pair of Blankets
Hand Kerchiefs, Beads, and Three
Knives, He then went on with us
and crossed a fresh water
Creek. The Land on Each side
excellent - He took us on, saying
He would take us to His Tribe
and mentioned the Names of
Chief’s - we walked about 8
miles, when to our great surprise
we heard several voices calling
after us on looking back we
saw 8 men all armed with spears
&c &c &c - when we stopped they
threw aside their weapons
