abandon the spot on which they have placed themselves -
I will be very frank with you & tell you at once that from
my knowledge of Fawkner I anticipate some difficulty if not
danger to the interests of the Association, from his position
there - I know it was the opinion of Capt Swanston, Mr Gillibrand
& Mr Batman that if necessary they should resort to force
in order to remove them Some other members took a different view
& agreed with me in deprecating such a measure - I confess
I entertain a strong opinion on this subject, I consider such a
proceeding would be at variance with the principles on which
the Association was formed, that no advantage would compensate
for the influence which such proceeding would have on the
Natives & which hereafter might afford them an example to
be fearfully turned against ourselves & altogether lead to the
most disastrous results - Under a strong impression of these
views, I thought it right to address a Letter to Mr Batman
a few days before I left Hobart Town
on the subject for the purpose chiefly of putting them on
record & it will be a great relief to me to learn that the
association have succeeded in removing them without
adopting any hostile measures - Thus much I have thought
it right to mention to you -

With regard to Messrs Palmer & Co I notice what you say
as to their connection with the South Australian Colony
& what is consequently likely to be their view of our Association
& here you will allow me to observe that I should not have
thought of taking the liberty of mentioning the subject to them
in your name, had not Capt Swanston informed told me
that in case of your not being in London, they would be authorised
to act on your behalf. I have not gone much into the subject
with them & your Letter has reached me in time to prevent
further communication - I should think with you that
in the next address Letter to your Lord Glenelg it would be necessary
