and Capt Montagu nephews of Col. Arthur were to be
parties included altho' I believe in consequence of the place they
hold in the Government their names were not to appear.
I am quite alive to the diplomacy of all Governors
but at the same time from having had a good deal of
communication with him, I think Col Arthur is sincere
in reference to the proposed settlement - Indeed from
the advantages to be expected from
its contiguity to VDL I should think it likely he would
prefer such a plan, rather than that it should be under
the jurisdiction of Sir Richard General Bourke - Did Capt
Swanston send you copy of Mr Wedges Letter of 9 August last
from Port Philip with copy of Todds Journal from 9 June
to 7 Augt also Mr Wedges Letter of 3 Sept - He has informed
you of course of their having discovered an White Man English man of
the name of Buckley who absconded from Governor Collin's
party 30 years ago & had lived with the Natives ever since
during which time he had never seen a White Man & it
had almost entirely forgotten
was some days before he could recover his native language.

acquisition in exploring the Country & in managing the
Natives over whom he seems to possess great influence
Mr Batman made me a present of his Cloak & war
Club with several other weapons & some baskets & other things made
by the Natives which I have with me in London -
If you have seen Copy of Mr Fawkners
Batmans Letter to Capt Swanston of the 20th Sept 35 you
will see at once to what I alluded in speaking of the
danger to be apprehended from a collision with Mr
Fawkners party - I am by no means satisfied that
they will find Fawkner so willing as you imagine to
