a very much more influential person than myself to move
him in the business - This I take to be our position now -
The association must throw overboard the Treaty with
the Natives & also give up all idea of the Government
granting the Land to them - then in case of the Government
being willing to form a Settlement, will arise the question
by what arrangements can it be made most subservient
to the objects & views of our association & this leads into such
an immensely wide field that I should shrink from the
responsibility of recommending any specific course -
You have never alluded to the circumstance of the
association having authorised you on their behalf
to offer the Government a very large sum (if my memory
serves me it was ₤30,000) for the Land in question
& I am inclined to think you have not received the
packet containing these instructions - This I know
the leading members of the Association considered
was an offer that would take in Downing Street
& that they would very much prefer paying a
considerable sum down, to any provision as to
Quitrents or to taking it at so much per acre -
This again is another view of the subject & you will
see in a moment on such view the extreme delicacy
& tact that will would be required in making such a
bargain with the Government - Perhaps Capt
Swanston has informed you that it was intended
that Mr Batman should negociate another treaty
with the Natives for a larger Tract of Country
& that in this proposed arrangement, Capt Forster
