March 22

Inspected the progress of Mr Hoddle in laying out
the Town of Melbourne. Crossed the Yarra to the
East side of Hobson's Bay. The land between the
River & Sea partly marsh & partly sand for some
miles from the Point or entrance of Hobson's River
and not very promising either for cultivation or
Grazing.

March 23d.

Inspected the spot fixed proposed for a Missionary Station.
The situation is very good in every respect. A
Reserve shd be made here of from 4 to 6 Sections.
A small building is erecting partly by the labor of
the Natives & of the Overseer & Missionary himself.

March 24 -

Conferred with the Missionary Langhorne and Police Magistrate
and arranged the details of the Mission as far as can
be done at present. Mr Langhorne has great hopes of
succeeding in inducing the adults to work
for food & Clothing and to leave their children with him
for instruction. Rode along the banks of the Salt River
which abound in good land for grazing and cultivation
for several miles from Melbourne inward.

March 25 -

Made a second inspection of the Town for the purpose of fixing
the levels of the Streets and arranging the conditions for sale
of building allotments. Weather boisterous & occasional
heavy showers.

March 26 -

Attended Church at Melbourne. Congregation less numerous
than on the first Sunday I attended. The Sabbath is not
well observed any where in N S Wales except by a few Persons
of sober habits.

March 27 -

Weather wet & cold - remained in Camp.

March 28 -

Proceeded early on a ride up the bank of the
Yarra - kept the R. bank. The Land for the
first 5 miles from Melbourne is not of the best
quality being probably but better suited for Cattle than Sheep.
Crossed a Creek about 2½ miles from Melbourne
and a second at five - from thence the land
improves in appearance & quality being heavily
wooded & no scrub with occasional fine flats
near the Rivers bank for about 8 miles further
when having passed Mollison's & Woods Stations
