to a fine large water hole. Halted here to refresh
having travelled 11 miles. Proceeded then across
plains of rather better herbage (but much burnt)
for about 4 miles then thro’ a Wood of Box
Trees 3 miles upon passing which a very beautiful
valley appeared in sight and a fine prospect
of the Ranges to the Westward & Northward.
Descended into the Valley and thence to the
Weareaby 3 miles. distance this day 21 miles.
The Valleys of the Weareby and its tributaries
are here very beautiful and abound with
herbage of a rich tho’ coarse description & the
enclosing slopes with good sheep pasture. Upon
the whole these (with the exception of part of
Illawarra are the finest I have seen in the
Colony. The views from some of the surrounding
heights are very picturesque.

March 17

From some difficulty in procuring guides for the
Station of Mr Sams on the Salt R. did not start
until qr past 10. Crossed the Weareby by a Ford
of our own discovery but not without much
labor & being obliged to unload the dray.
The ascent from the Valley of that River was very
steep & difficult as was the passage of a Creek
called by the English Penny Royal Creek - now
the dry bed of a River in a very deep Ravine,
ascending from thence passed over some plains
of rather good herbage and sheltered by woods
that fringed their exterior, thence crossing one
chain of Ponds where there is fresh water,
reached another chain under Mount Coterill
where we encamped. Distance travelled 10 miles.
Country to the N & W. of Mt Coterill open and
of rather a good description and totally
by the two Chains of Ponds.

March 18

Moved at 7 for the Station of Mr Sams which was found to be
about 8 miles distant. The route led over some good sheep
downs. This Station at which are three of Sheep is
situated in the western branch of the Salt River. Being there
informed that Mr Aitken who had a flock feeding some miles
distant
