as the site of a Missionary Establishment for the
civilization of the aboriginal Natives. It is well
situated on the left bank of the Yarre’ Yarre’
River about 3 miles from the Township. A
House is in progress for the Missionary. I
have not yet had an opportunity of speaking
to him or ascertaining whether he has made
any progress in obtaining the confidence of
the Natives resorting to the Township.

March 6 -


This day received several of the letters and reports,
of progress and duty performed from the Employes
of Govt in the District. The Survey has not proceeded
so rapidly as I desired. See Returns &c.
Some heavy showers of rain fell this day. Rode
out in the afternoon in the direction of Geelong about
3 miles. A fine open Country but at present very
short of grass owing to the dry weather which lately
prevailed.
From the Burial ground the Shipping in the
Harbour at Gellibrand's point is distinctly visible.

March 7


Made arrangements for proceeding towards the interior.
Directed the Town to be laid out. In the afternoon rode
thro’ a beautiful valley to a Station of Mr Batmans &
Mr Gellibrands.
A Vessel arrived from Launceston with Sheep being the
3d within 9 days & bringing 1500 Sheep & 10 Settlers.

March 8 -


A large number of the aboriginal Natives
above 120 came into Melbourne to whom I
distributed Blankets and Clothing and exhorted
them to good conduct and attention to the Missionary.
Buckley interpreted. Gave four brass plates
as honorary distinctions for good conduct
to Natives recommended by Capt Lonsdale.

March 9:


Left Melbourne at qr past 7 for Geelong. The
route for the first 4 miles leads thro’ a very
