I marked a Tree near which the Building
shd be erected having a small look out
on the sea break in front of the House at
about 500 yards distance. This Station tho’
some what inland is the best that could
be found & will enable an officer of
Customs to put himself on board any
Vessel to the Settlement and to
watch the arrival & departure of all.
An establishment of this sort is quite
necessary to prevent smuggling. It is
probable also this Station will answer for

Pilot
Boats
the Pilots, signals being made from the
Light House to intimate the appearance
of a Ship in the Offing. The Customs shd
have a decked boat of about 30 Tons &
a whale boat. Pilots who would have
to got go outside the Harbour to conduct
Strangers in would require a Vessel of
greater tonnage -
Water has been found near the Boat anchorage
by digging. There may be some difficulty in procuring
a sufficient supply at the Station but it may be brought
from the opposite shore where it is said to be
plentiful in a large swamp.

Sailed from under Pt. Nepean about 1 p.m. and
anchored near Point Gellibrand at qr past 6.

may not become the Site of a large Town. I thought therefore
it wd be advantageous to mark out some
allotments which might be offered for sale immediately.
Went on shore with Surveyor Hoddle and marked
the direction of the principal lines for Quays and
Buildings. Directed him to have the whole peninsula
surveyed immediately and pointed out the parts
