Anchored in Pt Phillip at 2 p.m. on the
Southern side about 4 miles to the eastward
of Point Nepean and about three from
where Col. Collins formed his temporary
establishment in 1803.
In the Evening went on shore at Point
Nepean landing at the Place which Collins
called Sullivan's Bay and ascended the
Hill which seems to be composed entirely
of Sand and covered with thick bushes
its greatest height being from 150 to 180

Light House
feet. Proposed to place a Light House
on the centre Hummock of the Hill if a
foundation can be made. Examined
Sullivans Bay and the whole coast between
Point Nepean and the Anchorage (about
3 miles) to discover a convenient station
for a Custom House Boat or a Pilot
Boat but found nothing that would at
all answer.

March 2d –


Proceeded early this morning in search of
a Station for the Customs on the opposite
or western Side of the Port and found
a tolerably convenient position just
within the southern point of
A decked boat drawing from 6 to 8 feet water
may lay well off the Station and by placing
the House a little to the Southward and

within the land about 500 yards from the
Boat anchorage & from the projecting point
which protects it from the South East, a
view may be obtained of the Light House
(where a Signal Post shd be established)
and of the Western Channel by which
Ships proceed upwards to the Settlement.
