John Armstrong on beauty & love

Associate professor John Armstrong, from the University of Melbourne, examines two important themes in medieval times: material beauty and romantic love.

Material beauty was thought to enhance appreciation of spiritual beauty, and romantic love was synonymous with devotion, sacrifice and delicacy. Professor Armstrong discusses how these themes are relevant to life in the modern world.

Part of the 'Life in the Middle Ages' series, this lecture was held on 1 May 2008 at the State Library of Victoria, in association with The medieval imagination exhibition.
