Biographical history

Madonna Grehan is researching An émigré gentlewoman midwife in Port Phillip and Victoria 1848–80. The project will support research for a history of women, maternity care and family life in mid–19th-century Victoria. It will be seen through the lens of Sarah Barfoot, an émigré midwife who in 1848 joined the diaspora from Van Diemen’s Land to the District of Port Phillip.

Caroline Clemente is researching Thomas Woolner: a Pre-Raphaelite artist in Melbourne. This research will bring together Woolner's works of art, of which the State Library Victoria has the largest holding, and place them in their social, artistic and historical context.
