How to use this website

If you’re unsure how to get the most out of this site, here are a few ideas that may help you.

How can I view articles?

There are several ways to view and read the articles, illustrations, bibliographies, end notes and other material contained in each of the journals.

You can:

  • Read the contents or view images of the original printed pages of a particular journal.
  • Read transcripts of articles which contain links to scanned images of the original printed page. In this mode you can navigate through an entire edition.
  • View the individual printed pages and then browse through the article in this mode.
  • View illustrations that have been separated out from the text. In this mode you can also view all the illustrations in a particular article one after the other.
  • View a large version of each illustration by double clicking the image itself.

How can I find articles and other material?

There are two ways to find articles and other information on this website:

Browsing

You can browse by:

  • Journal editions
    You can browse editions by clicking the ‘Browse journal issues’ next to the ‘About’ link in the top navigation bar. You will then see the front covers of each journal edition. From there you can click the links under each edition to view its contents.
  • Articles
    Once you’re looking at a particular edition you can then browse through the transcribed text pages, the images of the original pages, and the illustrations that have been separated out from the text.

Searching

There are three ways to search for articles on this website:

  • Basic search
    Use the search box in the top-right hand side of the screen to search by keyword. Type one or more keywords into this box and click Go’. The search engine will find any records that include all of your search terms. You can also search for an exact phrase by enclosing the words with quotation marks.
  • Advanced search
    If you didn’t find what you were looking for using the basic search, you can do a more precise search using the author, title and publication date fields. Use quotation marks to enclose phrases and the words ‘and’, ‘or’ between words.
  • By author
    You can also search for articles written by a particular author. Click the ‘A-Z authors link in the top navigation bar. Choose letter of the alphabet that corresponds to the first letter of the author’s last name. A list of authors will appear. Click the author’s name you are interested in to reveal a list of all the articles written by that author.
