Dr Ruth Pullin, art historian and guest curator of the National Gallery of Victoria’s 2011 touring exhibition Eugène von Guérard: nature revealed, will join us for the first in the 2013 series of Creative Fellow talks to discuss her research on the Library’s holdings of Eugène von Guérard’s drawings.
Throughout his long career – in Italy, Germany, Australia, New Zealand and England – the 19th century landscape painter Eugène von Guérard (1811–1901) rarely travelled without one of his pocketsized sketchbooks. Thirty-five of his 46 treasured – and exquisitely beautiful – sketchbooks are known to have survived … but is it possible that more may be found within the collections of the Library?
This talk will present the strategies involved and the findings to date in the conceptual reconstruction of von Guérard’s sketchbooks.
This is an exclusive event for members of the State Library of Victoria Foundation. Find out about becoming a member.
Please book for this event by Tuesday 12 February.
