This small oil painting by Clarice Beckett is a delightful example of her unique style.
It is one of a number of works Beckett is known to have painted of structures such as roads and railway bridges crossing the Yarra River. This painting is typical of Beckett’s work, being completed on a small board in a palette of muted pink, grey and cream. The bridge in the middle ground of the painting is immediately recognisable as Princes Bridge. The backdrop of the Flinders Street Station clocktower indicates that the view is downstream towards the mouth of the river.
The painting was purchased by the State Library in 2006 with generous assistance from the Library Foundation.
