Sociology
The Library established the Sociology Collection in the late 19th century with the works of Compte, Marx, Weber and Durkheim, and with the acquisition of major early 20th century journals such as American Journal of Sociology (Chicago), the Sociological Review (London), and L’Anee Sociologique (Paris).
What's in the Sociology Collection?
This collection contains a wide range of materials focusing on the study of human society. Encompassing every aspect from crime and social welfare, to family life, health and sexuality, it reflects the depth and complexity of this area of study.
What's special about this collection?
Since World War II, the collection has grown and diversified as the discipline itself has expanded into many different fields. Particular strengths include a wide range of publications in women's issues, works that focus on ethnic groups which have a presence in Victoria, and authoritative materials relating to different types of disabilities. Other areas include food and cookery, conflict studies, social groups and movements and, more recently, the development of Queer Theory.
How do I access material in this collection?
A selection of materials from the Sociology Collection is available for browsing and reading in the Redmond Barry Reading Room.
