Past La Trobe Society fellow Dr Helen MacDonald discusses Port Melbourne’s colonial past and the influence of characters such as Henry Condell, Melbourne’s first mayor. She explains why Henry was a mysterious man of many trades and sheds light on what made him the people’s choice.
Our collection contains a number of items related to Henry and colonial Melbourne including:
- an oil painting and photograph of Henry
- a collection of water-colours of early Melbourne by Liardet
- an account of the early years of the Port Phillip District of New South Wales
This talk is part of the Collection Reflections series.
