Queen's Hall

Queen's Hall is one of Melbourne’s most beautiful 19th-century interiors. First opening in 1856, it was the Library's main reading room until the Domed Reading Room opened in 1913. From 1915, Queen’s Hall served as a museum space until it was closed for renovation in 1973. In 1975 it reopened as the State Library’s Arts, Music and Performing Arts Library.

Where is Queen's Hall?

Located on the first floor facing Swanston Street, Queen's Hall is accessed via the grand marble staircase. Above the entrance is a huge mural entitled War by Harold Septimus Power. This mural was acquired by the Library in 1924 to commemorate the role of Australian soldiers in World War I.

Venue hire

The central foyer of Queen's Hall is available for hire as a function venue. Information about its capacity, facilities and services are available on the Queen's Hall venue hire page
