Genealogy Centre

The Helen Macpherson Smith Genealogy Centre houses the Library's Genealogy Collection. Essentially a self-service area where genealogists can undertake their own family history research, this room contains a wide range of materials on microfilm, microfiche and CD-ROM as well as a number of genealogy-related books and journals for reading and browsing.

Where is the Genealogy Centre?

One of four bluestone-walled enclosed courtyards, the entrance to Genealogy is on the ground floor just off the Information Centre. The exact location of this room is clearly identified on the Library floor plan.

What's in this room?

As you enter the room through double glass doors, you'll find the latest collection of newly acquired books displayed in purpose-built shelves.

On the left-hand side of the room there are reading tables, microfiche and microfilm readers, computer workstations and clusters of arm chairs. Microfilm readers are also located to the right of the entrance, along with large filing cabinets containing a wide range of microfilmed records, FamilySearch database workstations and card catalogue indexes.

Shelving at the back of the room holds a selection of key reference books, histories, shipping guides, indexes and registers. Large cabinets containing microfiche copies of various materials including the St Catherine's Index and the Australian Electoral Rolls are also located in this area.

What facilities are available?

Several computer workstations which provide access to the Library's catalogue, databases and the web are spread throughout the room. Other facilities include:

  • PCs for CD-ROM access
  • microfilm and microfiche readers
  • microfiche/film copiers
  • laser printer.

In-house guides

Directly opposite the entrance to the Genealogy Centre is where you will find the Library's in-house Genieguides. Compiled by members of staff as a shortcut to locating records in the room, these guides list microfiche, microfilm and CD-ROM records by each Australian state and selected overseas countries. Paper and pencils are also provided for jotting down information.

Information desk

Also opposite the entrance is the Genealogy information desk where you can pick up a guide to the room and ask for help using the equipment or finding what you need. A stand to the left of the desk contains Library research guides, pamphlets, and other information of general interest to genealogists and family historians.

Behind the desk a noticeboard displays notices advertising genealogy-related conferences, festivals and groups.

When is this room open?

Genealogy can be visited during standard Library opening hours.
