Front Foyer

As you enter the Library in Swanston Street, you will pass through the main doors and vestibule into a grand front foyer. Originally built in 1853, this impressive space is the starting point for every visit.

Reception desk

This is where you can obtain general information about the Library, ask for directions, pick up brochures explaining how the Library works and join an orientation tour. A plasma screen above the desk displays the Library's current What's On events listings.

For security reasons, staff at the reception desk are unable to accept mail, parcels or courier deliveries. All such items should be delivered to Despatch near the corner of Little Lonsdale and Russell Streets. The exact location of Despatch is clearly identified on the Library floor plan.

Cloakroom

Coats, umbrellas, large bags and backpacks, food and drink (except water in a bottle with a secure lid - see the Library's policy on food and drink) are not permitted in the Library. If you have any of these items, you will need to deposit them in the self-service, coin-operated lockers before entering the main part of the Library. These lockers are operated by Smarte Carte Australia Pty Ltd on behalf of the Library.

Public telephones are also located in the cloakroom area.

Security checkpoint

The security checkpoint is located just beyond the reception desk, prior to the entrance to the Information Centre. You must pass through the security gates before visiting our reading rooms, collection areas and heritage galleries.

Keith Murdoch Gallery

Located to the south side of the foyer is the entrance to the Keith Murdoch Gallery, where a range of free exhibitions are presented throughout the year.

Mr Tulk Cafe

The Library's cafe, Mr Tulk, can be accessed via the Cloakroom. The main entrance is from La Trobe Street. Tulk Junior, a smaller takeaway-oriented version of Mr Tulk is located at the Foyer end of the Cloakroom.

Opening hours

The Library is open every day of the year, except public holidays. Check the Library's opening hours for more information about our hours of operation.
