Experimedia

Experimedia offers visitors the opportunity to interact with the latest technology and digital information in a relaxed and enjoyable way.

Funky designer furnishings and fittings, and lime green banners announce that this is a space where surprising things happen - one that encourages hands-on learning, discovery and experimentation.

Where is Experimedia?

One of four spacious bluestone-walled courtyards, the entrance to Experimedia is on the ground floor, just off the Information Centre. The exact location of this room is clearly identified on the Library floor plan

What's in this room?

Experimedia is divided into a number of 'activity' zones showcasing a range of hardware and software:

  • Games Pod
Computer games can be used by one or more players on the available Wii, Xboxes and Playstations.

  • Creative Pod
Ten iMacs that can be used by individuals and groups to create music, animations, videos and digital images using the latest software from the Adobe Creative Suite.

  • Play Pod
A place for families with young children to share stories and play activities together.
Read a story, make a book, draw a portrait, create a puppet show, watch a digital exhibition, or just spend some time enjoying a cuddle on the bean bags.

  • Media Wall
Showcasing digital content from the collections of the State Library and broadcasting news, programs and events, the media wall dominates the room with its 6 x 4.5 metre screen. Featuring a series of presentations including theatre performances, electronic music, digital videos and animations that focus on particular aspects of the Library's collections, the media wall adds another dimension to the Experimedia experience.
  • Study Pod

Space for young people to make use of wireless broadbrand access (WiFi) while studying at desks or lounging on bean bags.

Wireless hotspot

Free wireless broadband access is available in Experimedia for Library users with laptops or PDAs. Known as WiFi or Wireless LAN, it allows you to connect to the internet without cables or wires. For more information, see Using Wireless Services at the Library.

Other facilities

This room contains two computers providing access to the Library’s online catalogue, databases and the web for use by children under the age of 12. Macs loaded with the Adobe Creative Suite and other software are also available for anyone to use (see the Apple Mac Computer Access page for more information).

If you need help using the equipment in the room, please ask a roving customer service officer.

Events in Experimedia

Throughout the year, a range of forums, school holiday programs and other events are held in Experimedia. For more information, see the School Holiday Activities section, Press Play, Outside-In Cinema and What's On.

When is this room open?

Experimedia can be visited during standard Library opening hours. It is sometimes closed to the public when events are held.

Venue hire

Experimedia is one of several spaces in the Library that is available for hire.
