Opening  Hours

The State Library of Victoria is open every day except Good Friday and Christmas Day. The standard hours of operation are:

Monday to Thursday   10am to 9pm
Friday to Sunday 10am to 6pm
Public holidays 10am to 6pm

Main areas of the Library

The standard opening hours only apply to the main public areas of the Library:

  • Information Centre
  • La Trobe Reading Room (Australiana)
  • Redmond Barry Reading Room
  • Experimedia
  • Arts Reading Room
  • Newspaper Reading Room
  • Genealogy Centre
  • Copy Centre.

Please Note
All book retrievals from onsite storage cease at 5.30pm each day.

Mr Tulk Cafe

The Library's cafe, Mr Tulk, is open from 7am to 5pm Monday to Thursday, 7am to 7pm Friday and 9am to 5pm on Saturday.

Heritage Collections Reading Room

As the official reading room where you can view rare and original items from the collection, the Heritage Collections Reading Room has the same opening hours as the main areas of the Library. This room is visited by appointment only.

Dome Galleries

The Galleries are open every day from 10am to 5pm, including public holidays (except Good Friday and Christmas Day).

Keith Murdoch Gallery

This gallery is open every day from 10am to 5pm when exhibitions are on display (Good Friday and Christmas Day excepted).

Specialist collection rooms

The Library has three specialist rooms which can only be visited by appointment. These are:

  • Australian Manuscripts
  • Pictures
  • Maps, Rare Books, Children's Literature.

If you have a specific request or need assistance locating uncatalogued items in any of these collections, you can make an appointment to talk to one of our specialist librarians between 10am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.
