Using Wireless Services at the Library

Laptop and PDA users can choose from two wireless services at the State Library of Victoria.

Free wireless access

The State Library, in conjunction with RMIT University, offers free wireless broadband web access. To use this service you need:

  • a standard wireless LAN card with 802.11b or 802.11g capabilities
  • a web browser installed on your laptop or PDA device.

The Library's free WiFi hotspots are:

  • the Information Centre
  • the La Trobe Reading Room
  • Experimedia
  • the Redmond Barry Reading Room
  • Journals & Magazines
  • the Heritage Collections Reading Room (for those working with heritage materials).

Optus wireless access

The Library also offers wireless broadband access through Optus. To use this service you need:

  • an Optus Wireless Connect account
  • a standard wireless LAN card with 802.11b capabilities
  • a web browser installed on your laptop or PDA device.

The Library's Optus WiFi hotspots are:

  • Corner of Swanston and La Trobe streets (lawn area)
  • Front Foyer
  • Information Centre
  • Newspaper Reading Room
  • La Trobe Reading Room.
