Electronic resources

The following items are a selection of electronic materials that are available for research and study when you visit the Library. Most of these items can be accessed at computer workstations throughout the Library. Staff at the information desk can help you locate these resources.

Current Medical Research
The most current medical information is found in journal articles, scientific papers, conference proceedings and some online sources.  The following databases, accessed via the State Library of Victoria’s workstations, provide access to a range of patient and practitioner information. 

Health source – Nursing/Academic edition
For current medical research, covering a wide range of health issues:  search nearly 600 full-text medical journals, plus several hundred more, abstracted titles.  This database has an academic, or scientific emphasis.

Health and wellness resource center 
This database combines access to full-text medical and health journals and also: a variety of full-text reference books, such as dictionaries and encyclopedias; drug information; a health organisation directory; and daily medical news updates.  More consumer-oriented than Health source (above)

Alt HealthWatch
Access to full-text journals, reports and newsletters, focusing on a variety of perspectives within complementary, holistic and integrated approaches to health care and wellness.

Meditext
An index, with abstracts, to over 100 journals.  Some are also linked to full-text articles.  Covers a range of health topics, but particularly of use for Australia specific information, such as Aboriginal and rural health issues.

Informit Search [Health (Medicine)] 
Range of seven Australian index databases (no full-text).  Covers issues such as HIV/Aids, rural health, aboriginal health and public health issues.

ETG Complete – Therapeutic Goods Online
Guidelines for therapy, including prescribing recommendations, for a range of diseases. Based on current medical evidence. Produced by

E-mims
Electronic version of the standard Australian source for prescription drug information.  Also covers: over-the-counter drugs; disease and treatment information; directory of support groups; a diagnosis handbook; a drug interaction database.
