The following items are a selection of key print materials available in the Library. Some of these items may be on the shelves in the Information Centre and the Redmond Barry Reading Room. Others may need to be requested through our online catalogue. These items will then be retrieved from storage and delivered to the book collection point in this room.

A printed index to material on Australian political, economic and social affairs, from 1978 also available electronically from 1978 on all Library terminals

British Humanities Index 1962–2000

R016.05 B77
Indexes broadly in the social sciences and humanities fields of literature, history and politics. Until 1947 it included British and American publications. From 1947 onwards only British titles were indexed. The Library also holds the British Humanities Index preceding titles of Athenaeum Subject Index to Periodicals 1915 and Subject Index to periodicals 1915-1962.

Readers Guide to Periodical Literature (1890-)

An American index with broad subject coverage, it covers more popular magazines of general interest.

Humanities Index 1975-

The Library also holds the Humanities Index preceding titles of International Index to Periodicals 1920–1955, International Index 1955–1965 and Social Science & Humanities Index 1966-1974.

PAIS International in print 1990 

R016.3 P96P
A worldwide index to social science journal articles with emphasis on contemporary issues and public policy. The Library also holds accompanying earlier titles of Public Affairs Information Service: annual cumulated bulletin 1915–1990 at R016.3 P96, and the Cumulated subject index to the PAIS annual bulletins 1915 1974 at R016.3 P96C.

Contemporary literary criticism

Extracts and essays reviewing the works of major authors. Companion titles cover the 19th and 20th century authors and children’s authors.

Dictionary of national biography

Biographical information on people from British history. It is accompanied by biographical works including the current Who’s Who from many countries and specialist biographical works on specific areas such as women in history, scientists and authors.

Facts on file

A chronological tool identifying current events from around the happening on each day of the year. Similar works, such as day by day chronologies and dictionaries of battles will be found in the same area.

Oxford English Dictionary

The 20-volume dictionary is part of an extensive collection of English and translation dictionaries giving definitions, origins and first known examples of the use of all words.

Encyclopedia of Religion

This is accompanied by a range of other encyclopedias on specific religions.

Encyclopedia of Sociology

Part of a suite of reference tools on all aspects of sociology and cultural groups and specific social problems.
