Print resources
The following items are a selection of key print materials available in the Library. They can be located and requested through our online catalogue. These items will then be retrieved from storage and delivered to the book collection points in the La Trobe Reading Room or the Information Centre. Some original or rare items may be delivered to the Heritage Collections Reading Room.

AC 016.7941 W62CH Besides listing all chess texts in English printed before 1850, this valuable resource also includes articles on chess found in general journals and details of chess columns commenced before 1850. The work is arranged chronologically, and many records include background information, much of it from sources outside the volume being described.

AC 016.7941 L975C Intended to be a continuation of Betts, listing considerably more titles than found in Betts, but makes no claims to completeness. It is a record of all the works on chess which the author examined over a four-year period. The arrangement is by subject, under which entries are generally listed chronologically.

It does not include 20th century facsimile editions of early chess works, nor books which contain only a section on chess, for example Colonna’s 1499 Hypnerotomachia Poliphili or fragments of books, such as the single leaf of Caxton’s Game and playe of the chesse.

AC 016.7941 V331C The original volume aims to provide as complete a listing as possible, with commentary, of all known chess literature issued in Australia and New Zealand up to 1977. The supplements extend this date to 1988. Arrangement is by subject, under which entries are listed chronological.

AC 794.103 H766O (1992) Provides an overview of the subject of chess that is suitable for the experts and non-experts alike. A large number of technical terms is included along with hundreds of names of openings. For a player’s most noteworthy performances the score is given in wins, draws and losses. Entries are in alphabetical order, and are cross-referenced. Appendix 1 contains an index of named openings and variations, while appendix 2 lists chess terms in French, German, Italian, Magyar, Russian and Spanish.
